NTFS
New Technology File System
Succeeds FAT32, capable of storing inidividual files larger than 4GB with higher read/write speeds.
FAT32
File Allocation Table
32GB limit, compatible with older PC’s, Mac’s and gaming consoles.
exFAT
Extensible File Allocation Table
More advanced than FAT32, supported by more devices and has larger file and partition sizes.
ext3
Third Extended Filesystem
Linux based filesystem that was originally the default (until ext4)
Max file size of 16GB, with partitions up to 2TB
ext4
Fourth Extended Filesystem
Linux based filesystem succeeding ext3.
APFS
Apple Filesystem
Used by macOS 10.13 and later
NFS
The network file system (NFS) is used to mount remote storage devices into the local file system on a Linux system.
Swap Partition
The swap partition on a Linux system is a portion of the hard disk formatted with a minimal kind of file system and used in situations when the operating system runs out of physical memory and needs more of it.
It can only be used by the memory manager and not for the storage of ordinary data files.
