monophthongs
A simple vowel composed of a single configuration of vocal organs
dipthongs
A complex vowel composed of a sequence of 2 different configurations of vocal organs
nucleus
The core element of a syllable, carrying stress, tone, and pitch.
running speech
The usual form of spoken language with all the words and phases run together without pauses in between them.
velar
Sound produced by raising the back of the tongue toward the velum.
approximants
constant sound produced by constriction of the vocal tract that is not narrow enough to block the vocal tract
glides
sound produced with only slight closure of the articulators and that requires some movement of the articulators during production
rounded
an articulation in which the lips are pursed or rounded
tone language
language that uses different pitch to contrast on syllables to signal a difference in word meaning
stress
a property of syllables, a stressed syllable is more prominent due to having greater loudness.
tense
vowel sound that has some more peripheral position in the vowel space
lax
vowel sound that has less peripheral position in the vowel space
vowel space
range of possible vowel sounds of a language from high low to back vowel.
high
an articulation in which the tongue is relatively high in the oral cavity.
low
an articulation in which the tongue is low in the oral cavity.
