Allusion
A reference to a person or thing of literal, cultural, political or historical significance
Apostrophe
An abstract idea an inanimate object or a person who is no longer living is addressed to spoken to as if it were human
Antithesis
A person or thing that is the direct opposite of someone or something else
Oxymoron
When two contradictory words are next to each other for example that girl’s dress is pretty ugly
Paradox
This is something which is seemingly absurd or contradictory statements which is truthful
eg.you will kill him with kindness
Irony
Irony implies the opposite of what is said
for example I can’t wait for my detention on Friday afternoon
sarcasm
The use of words to mock or annoy someone for humorous purposes
Satire
Satire is the use of irony or sarcasm to highlight expose or ridicule human, social or political weaknesses or stupidities
the satirist would like to change the situation educate and entertain through humor
Caricature
When the image of a person is exaggerated
Parody
This is the Imitation or exaggeration of a situation to satirise or create humour
Hyperbole
This is when something is over-exaggerated
for example the teacher complained that she had had hundreds of interruptions that day
Euphemism
When a situation which is unpleasant or uncomfortable is expressed in a more sensitive kind and tactive manner
for example he passed away which means he died
Anticlimax
Does a build-up of ideas but the final statement is often flat and unexpected
Pun
A clever play on words alike in sound but different in meaning. the double meaning is used to convey humour.
Rhetorical question
This is a question when answer is not expected.
