An exaggerated statement
Example:

Idiom
An expression that doesn’t exactly mean what words say
Example:
She spilled the beans
Pun
A humorous play on words which suggest multiple meanings
Example:
Where do pancakes live? In a flat.
Alliteration
The use of same beginning constant sound in a line or verse
Example:
Peter piper picked a peck of pickled peppers
Assonance
This is a repetition of identical or similar vowel sound in a series of words phrases and/or syllables
Example:
Try to light the fire
Onomatopoeia
A word that I’m imitates the sound it represents
Example:
Pop, bang, boom
Allusion
A reference to a famous person, place, or event
Example:
Don’t act like a Scrooge
Oxymoron
Contradictory terms appear side by side. Known as compressed paradox.
Example:
Hell’s angels
Irony
The use of words that mean opposite of what you really think in order to be funny
Example:
She’s a great singer but she sings like a crow
Foreshadowing
When an author mentions or hints at something that will happen later in the story
Flashback
When an author refers back to something that already took place in the story
