Figures of Speech Flashcards
A comparison in which one thing is compared to another. Ex: My mom is a teddy bear.
Metaphor.
A comparison of two things by using by using the words “like” or “as.” Ex: He is as tall as a giraffe.
Simile.
Giving human like qualities to animals or objects. Ex: The stars winked at me.
Personification.
An exaggerated statement. Ex: My backpack weighs a ton.
Hyperbole.
An expression that doesn’t exactly mean what the words say. Ex: She spilled the beans.
Idiom.
A humorous play on words which suggests multiple meanings. Ex:
- Where do pancakes live? In a flat!
- I used to be a baker but I didn’t make enough dough.
- Seven days without pizza makes one weak.
Pun.
The use of the same beginning consonant sound in a line or verse. Ex: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
Alliteration.
This is the repetition of identical or similar VOWEL SOUND in a series of words, phrases and/or syllables. Ex: Clap your hands and stamp your feet. Try to light the fire. It beats… as it sweeps… as it cleans!

A word that imitates the sound it represents.
Onomatopoeia.
A reference to a famous person, place, or event.
Allusion.
Contradictory terms appears side by side. Know as a compressed paradox.
Oxymoron.
Irony is the use of words that mean that mean the opposite of what you really think especially in order to be funny.
Irony.
When an author mentions or hints at something that will happen later in the story.
Foreshadowing.
When an author refers back to something that already took place in the story.
Flashback.
