Simile
A direct comparison which ALWAYS contains like or as.
Metaphor
A comparison without the use of like or as.
Personification
Gives human qualities to inanimate objects or abstract ideas.
Allusion
A direct or indirect referral to an external aspect.
Alliteration
Repetition of the same sounds at the beginning of words. It often highlights expression of movement.
Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds.
- Short vowel sounds create a mood of speed, joy, vitality or suspense.
- Long vowel sounds slow down the pace and temper of the mood.
Onomatopoeia
Uses words that replicate and reproduce real-life sounds and actions.
Oxymoron
Places two seemingly contradictory words/ideas next to each other ( on analysis, evoke a powerful meaning) eg. Painful pride
Paradox
Seemingly contradictory statement which, when analyses, it is found to be true. It is an extended oxymoron.
Irony
Implies the opposite of what is said.
Hyperbole
An over-exaggeration. Not to be taken literally.
Euphemism
Expresses an unpleasant or uncomfortable situation in a more sensitive manner
Synecdoche
A part is used to represent a whole.
Malapropism
Unintentional use of incorrect or similar sounding words
Spoonerisms
Mixing up of the initial sounds of spoken words
