Alliteration
Repetition of same letter at beginning of successive words or syllables
Anaphora
Repetition of a word, for emphasis, at beginning of successive phrases or clauses
Anastrophe
Inversion of the usual order of words, such as placing a preposition after, instead of before, the word it governs
Aposiopesis
An abrupt pause in a sentence for rhetorical effect
Asyndeton
Omission of conjunctions where one would normally expect them
Chiasmus
Arrangement of pairs of words in reverse, or criss-cross order
Ellipsis
Omission of words necessary to grammatical structure of sentence and easily supplied from the context
Hendiadys
Use of two nouns connected by et instead of single modified noun
Hyperbole
Exaggeration for rhetorical effect
Hysteron Proteron
Reversal of natural or logical order of ideas; literally putting “last things first”
Litotes
Affirming of something by denying its; a double negative
Metaphor
Implied simile or comparison, without use of some word meaning “as” or “like”

Substitution of one word for another that it suggests

Use of word whose sound suggests meaning
