Simile
A comparison in which one thing is said to be similar to something else. Use words “like” “as” and “than”
Ex: His hair was LIKE a wet mop
Metaphor
A comparison which states that a person, place, thing or quality is actually something else
Ex: this problem IS difficult
Personification
When human or living qualities are given to non-human or inanimate objects
Ex: The breeze whispered softly
Repetition
When words, phrases or lines are repeated in order to stress the imagery of provide a constant rhythm
Ex: row, row, row your boat…..
Onomatopoeia
When the sound of the word suits it’s meaning
Ex: the cat MEOWED loudly
Alliteration
When two or more words in close proximity begin with the same CONSONANT sound
Ex: she Gladly Gave her Grapes to George
Assonance
The repetition of VOWEL sounds at the beginning or in the middle of the consecutive words
Ex: the wOmen wIll sIng a hYmn in the gYm
Consonance
The repetition of FINAL CONSONANT sounds in consecutive words
Ex: they were beING crazy: laughING, cryING and singING all at once
Oxymoron
Two contrasting terms used together
Ex: Jumbo Shrimp
Hyperbole
A deliberate exaggeration
Ex: I have given him MOUNTAINS of help
