Comparison not using “like” or “as”
Allegory
Sometimes described as an extended metaphor. Describes one set of relationships and connections in terms of another.
Personification
Something that isn’t a person/inanimate described as if it is or acts animate/
Anthropomorphism
Similar to personification. Used when God is represented in human aspects.
Zoomorphism
Similar to anthropomorphism. Used when God (or humans) is represented in animal aspects.
Metonymy
Refers to something by referring to something associated or connected
with it (but is not an inherent part). (“the ends of the earth” referring to people on the farthest parts”)
Synecdoche
Refer to the whole by referring to the part or to the part by referring to the whole.
Hyperbole
Overstatement or exaggeration for effect
Merism (or Merismus)
Refers to a complete
entity by referring to its parts. Often this consists of a pair that
represents the whole, such as heaven and earth.
