Similie
A direct comparison between two unlike things using “like” “as” for example- “The stock market is as unpredictable as the weather”
Personification
Personification gives human characteristics to non-human things or abstract concepts. For example- “the market is constantly whispering to those who listen”
Exaggerated statement that’s not meant to be taken literally, example- “This investment strategy will make you a millionaire overnight! ”
Hyperbole
Repetition of initial consonant sounds in a series of words. For example- “Silver stocks surged this Spring”
Alliteration
Uses words that imitate the sounds they describe. Example- “The cash register at the jewelry store went ‘cha-ching’ with each sale”
Onomatopoeia
The opposite of what you expect would happen occurrs. Example “Investing in gold during the gold rush would’ve made you rich, but now it’s too late”
Irony
Combines contradictory terms. Example- “A bittersweet investment”
Oxymoron
Comparison between two things to highlight their similarities. Example- “investing in a diversified portfolio is like having a balanced diet”
Analogy
Milder or more polite way to express something that might be considered harsh or unpleasant. Example , “The Market correction” instead of “the market crash”
Euphemism
Overused word/Phrase. Although detrimental to originality, judiciously using cliches can resonate with the audience. Example - “all that glitters is not gold”
Cliche
Repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of consecutive sentences or clauses. For example “Gold is an investment. Gold is a store of value. Gold is security.”
Anaphora
Contrasting two ideas in the same sentence. Example- “Gold is a symbol of wealth, but also a refuge for the financially wise”
Antithesis
One word or phrase is substituted for another with which it closely associated. For example- “The white house issued a statement.” Where “the white house” stands in for the President’ of the United States”
Metonymy
Two or more clauses are balanced against each other using a reverse structure. EXAMPLE- “Gold you can trust; trust in gold you can”
Chiasmus
Form of understatement in which a positive statement is expressed by negating ifs opposite. Example- “This investment is not a bad idea”
Litotes
