symbolism
An author uses an object or “symbol” to refer to the deeper meanings in a story.
allusion
An author makes reference, or alludes, to a famous person, quotation, or event.
simile
An author uses simile to show how two things are similar by setting up a direct comparison, often using the word “like” or “as.”
metaphor
An author gives meaning to a word or idea by describing it as something else.
hyperbole
An author uses hyperbole to exaggerate the
descriptions or events in a story to emphasize a point.
irony
An author uses irony to make a point by saying its opposite or by drastically understating
its truth. Ironic statements mean something different from what they actually say.
rhetorical figure of speech
a literary device used to change, heighten, or describe the relationship among the meanings of words or themes in a story. A figure of speech does not have to be literal.
