What is Alliteration?
When 2 or more consecutive words sound the same at the start.
ex. the boring brown bear dove for fish
What is a Simile?
When a comparison is made using like or as.
ex. It’s as cold as the arctic
What is a Metaphor?
When a comparison is made directly.
ex. Her cheeks were on fire
What is a Hyperbole?
An exaggeration made to get a point across.
ex. It’s raining cats and dogs
What is a Onomatopoeia?
When a word sounds like what it means to help describe the scene.
ex. The bee buzzed around
What is round character?
A person who seems real and whose character is revealed to you in some detail.
What is a flat character?
A person who exists in the story but you know little about them. They have no change in the story
What is a dynamic character?
A person who changes during the story. The change in outlook or character is permanent.
What is a static character?
A person who stay relatively the same in the story. Events do not change them as a person.
What is Plot?
The main events in the story.
What is a story arc?
The story arc answers the question of how and why the plot happens.
What is the setting?
The time and location in which a story takes place.
What is theme?
A sentence that connects topics, characters. It will typically have lessons and morals that relate to the real world.
What is Point of view?
From which characters eyes you see the story.
What is first person view
A character within the story tells their own experiences/impressions
What is second person view
The story or piece of writing is from the perspective of “you”
What is third person limited view?
The narrator remains a detached observer, telling only the stories action and dialogue.
What is third person omniscient view?
The narrator tells the story from the viewpoint of ONE character in the story.
What is Conflict?
When 2 or more characters or forces do not agree. One must always win and one side must always lose in the end.
What is person vs person conflict?
Two characters come into direct conflict with one another.
What is person vs world conflict?
a character has an conflict with society as a whole, where their values, morals, or goals do not match those of the people around them.
What is person vs self conflict?
a character has an internal conflict where they are presented with two or more options and are unsure of which course to take.
What is tone?
the mood implied by an author’s word choice and the way that the text can make a reader feel.
