What is the definition of Simile?
A figure of speech comparing two different things using ‘like’ or ‘as’.
Example: ‘She was as fair as the winged angels in heaven.’
What is a Pun?
A form of wordplay that exploits multiple meanings of a term or similar-sounding words.
Example: ‘What’s the funniest fish in the sea? A clownfish.’
What is Imagery?
Descriptive language that evokes sensory experience and creates mental images.
Example: ‘Red roses, hearts, valentines cards, love letters all create strong images of love.’
What is a Metaphor?
A figure of speech that makes a direct comparison between two unrelated things without using ‘like’ or ‘as’.
Example: ‘He was drowning in absolute happiness.’
What is a Euphemism?
A mild or indirect word or expression used to replace one that may be considered harsh or blunt.

A figure of speech where human qualities are attributed to animals, inanimate objects, or abstract concepts.
Example: ‘Howling in anger the wind grasped aggressively at their icy faces.’
What is Allusion?
An indirect reference to a person, place, event, or literary work.
Example: ‘Don’t act like a Romeo in front of her. You’re so sappy in love’ - Referencing Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare.
What are Connotations?
The implied or associated meanings of a word beyond its literal definition.
Example: ‘Talkative, Conversational, Chatty, Nosy have connotations of someone that asks a lot of questions.’
