Rhetorical Questions
A question which is designed to agree with and difficult to disagree with.
E.g. You wouldn’t lock up your child, would you?
Figurative Language
Language that somebody must figure out to find its meaning
Hyperbole
An exaggeration to emphasise a point.
E.g.She was drowning in an ocean of tears.
Idiom
A metaphor or simile which is used so commonly that it isn’t thought upon.
E.g. cost an arm and a leg
Metaphor
A comparison between two dissimilar things without using “like” or “as”.
E.g.She had the heart of a lion.
Personification
An object is given human characteristics, qualities or traits.
E.g. The trees knocked on the window.
Simile
A comparison between two unlike things using “as” or “like”.
E.g. Th boy raced along the river like a gazelle running for its life.
Understatement
Expressing an idea with significantly less force than expected.
E.g. She wasn’t the exact fit for the circus.
Comparisons
Contrasting different things to influence the stance somebody has.
E.g. They bomb people’s homes, imagine bombing your friend’s home.
Alliteration
Using words that begin with the same consonant.
E.g. Take a magical moment to marvel at me.
Anecdotes
Brief stories used to appeal to make it more personal.
E.g. I went to Russia and saw all the homeless people on the streets. …
Emotional Appeals
Tests people’s sense of fairness, fears and righteousness.
E.g. Would you like a toxic dump in your back fence?
