Similes
A comparison of two unlike things using connecting words such as “like,” “as,” “than,” or a verb such as resemble.
Idiom
A phrase in which the words together have a meaning that is different from the literal meaning of the words.
Personification
A figure of speech i which a thing, an idea, or an animal is given human attributes.
Hyperbole
Exaggeration for the sake of emphasis.
Alliteration
The repetition of first consonants in a group of words.
Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds in the middle of words.
Repetition
The action of repeating something that has already been said or written.
Imagery
Visually descriptive or figurative language, especially in a literary work.
Onomatopoeia
The formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named (Example: cuckoo, sizzle ).
Conflict
A struggle between two opposing forces, usually a protagonist and an antagonist. It can be internal or external. (Example: man v technology, man v nature, etc.)
Setting
The place or type of surroundings where something is positioned or where an event takes place.
Fact
Something that can be proven.
Opinion
Something that can not be proven.
Purpose of Story
Persuade, Inform, Entertain.
Literal language
It means exactly what it says. (Example: “The grass looks green.”)
