Figurative Language Flashcards
Involves words that begin with the same sounds. (ex. Sally sells sea shells by the sea shore.)
Alliteration
Use a specific clause at the beginning of each sentence. (ex. Mad world! Mad kings! Mad composition!)
Anaphora
Focuses on the vowel sounds, repeating them. (ex. I Like Ike)
Assonance
An exaggeration that makes things seem bigger than they really are. (ex. He was dumber than a rock.)
Hyperbole
Tries to use a word in a literal sense that debunks what has been just said. (ex. You can’t fight here, this is the War Room!)
Irony
Saying something is something else in order to compare them. (ex. My heart is a lonely hunter)
Metaphor
Compared using “like” or “as”. (ex. Life’s like a box of chocolates.)
Simile
A word that has a similar meaning that can be used for another. (ex. The White House said…)
Metonymy
Sounds like what it means. (ex. Woof)
Onomatopoeia
Contradicts itself in the same sentence. (ex. War is peace)
Paradox
Giving an inanimate object the qualities of a living being. (ex. The sun smiled)
Personification
Uses homophones as a joke. (ex. A bicycle can’t stand because it is two tired).
Pun
Use a part to represent the whole. (Ex. ABCs)
Synecdoche
Counterpart of hyperbole. (ex. I have an operation. It isn’t very serious.)
Understatement
Contradiction that pits 2 ideas against each other.
