A way of using words that goes beyond their literal or usual meanings
It is used to make writing more vivid and interesting.
What does literal language mean?
Means exactly what is said
It contrasts with figurative language.

Makes a comparison between two unrelated things
Example: Love is a battlefield.
What is a simile?
Uses words like and as to make a comparison
Example: Her smile was like sunshine on a rainy day.
What is personification?
Human characteristics are given to something non-human
Example: Lightning danced across the night sky.
What is onomatopoeia?
A word that initiates the sound of the object or action it refers to
Example: The fire crackled soothingly.
