Alliteration
Repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words
Allusion
A reference to an image, character, or situation, from history, mythology, or religion
Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds within words
Consonance
Repetition of consonant sounds within or at the end of words
Figurative Language
words and phrases that go beyond simply their literal meaning
Foreshadowing
a narrative device in which the storyteller gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story.
Hyperbole
a figure of speech that makes a point by exaggeration
Imagery
The use of descriptive language that appeals to the readers’ senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch)
Irony (3 kinds)
Verbal Irony: The use of words to express the opposite of what is actually meant, (for ex., sarcasm)
Situational Irony: when the opposite of what you expect to happens is what happens (for ex., a fire station burns down)
Dramatic Irony: When the audience knows or understands something the characters don’t.
Metaphor
comparison of two unlike things without the use of “like” or “as”
Onomatopoeia
The use of words that sound like the sounds they describe
Personification
bestowing of human qualities on inanimate objects, ideas, and animals
Simile
comparison of two unlike things using of “like” or “as”
Symbolism
An object, character, animal, etc. that not only is itself, but also represents something else - both literal and figurative meanings at the same time.
