Comparing 2 unlike things without using “like, as, than”
Idiom
Popular phrase not meant to be taken literally.
Onomatopoeia
the word is spelled exactly as it sounds.
Allusion
Referring to someone or something that is well known.
Personification
giving human characteristics to non-human things(bring things to life)
Alliteration
Using the same sound at the beginning of at least 2 words that are close together.(Planned by writer)
Hyperboles
Extreme exaggerations (no possible way they are true). Humorous
Oxymoron
Includes words with opposite meanings in the same sentence.
Denotation
Dictionary Definition of a word.
Connotation
The feeling the word gives.
Situational Irony
Expect 1 thing to happen but something totally opposite happens.
Verbal Irony
Say one thing but mean the opposite.
Dramatic Irony
The audience knows something the characters don’t.
