allusion
a reference to something from history, literature, current events, or popular culture
alliteration
The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning or adjacent or closely connected words.
cliche
A phrase that has become overly familiar or commonplace
hyperbole
Big exaggeration, usually with humour
Idiom
Language that is peculiar to a group of people. Or readily understood to pertain to a specific context
metaphor
Comparing the qualities of two unlike things to achieve creative effect. Metaphors describe an object or action in a way that isn’t literally true, but helps explain an idea or make a comparison.
personification
Giving something human qualities, you emphasize a non-human’s characteristics by describing them with human attributes. That non-human can be an object, an animal. Or even an idea or a concept.
