Emotive language
words or phrases used to arouse a reader’s emotions
Extended metaphor
a metaphor which is continued through a series of lines or sentences in a text
Hyperbole
a deliberately exaggerated statement not meant to be taken literally
Imagery
the use of language to convey an idea (or picture a scene) to readers
Ironic
where the intended meaning differs from the expected one
Irony
the use of words that mean the opposite of what you intend, done for emphasis or humour
Juxtaposition
putting things side by side or close together
Metaphor
the use of a word or phrase that is used to call something a thing it is not- providing an image
Motif
distinctive theme that is often repeated in a literary work or piece of music
Pathetic fallacy
giving human feelings to inanimate things or objects
Personification
representing an idea in human form or having human characteristics
Rhetorical question
A question asked for dramatic effect and not intended to receive an answer
Rule of three (tricolon)
linking three points or features (usually adjectives) for impact
Sibilance
a literary device where strongly stressed consonants create a hissing sound (e.g. ‘s’, ‘f’, ‘sh’, ‘th’, etc)
Simile
where one thing is compared to another thing using a connective word (“like” or “as”)
