Fighting Disease Flashcards
What are the two types of pathogen?
Bacteria and viruses
How can bacteria make you feel ill?
Damages your cells
Produces toxins
How do viruses make you feel ill?
Replicate themselves by invading your cells
Cell machinery to produce many copies of themselves
Cell then bursts realising new viruses
What are the 3 things in your breathing pipe which protect from horrible things coming into your body
Skin
Hair
Mucus
To prevent Microorganisms getting into your body though cuts what happens?
Small fragments of cells called platelets help blood clot quickly to seal wounds
If a mircroorganism causing disease gets though your WBC come and save the day, what are the 3 things that they can do?
Consume them
Produce antibodies
Produce antitoxins
When a WBC comes and consumes an invading micro-organism what does it do?
Engulf foreign in cells and digest them
Explain how and what WBC do when producting antibodies?
WBC detects a foreign cell
Will then start to produce antibodies which lock on and kill invading cells
Antibodies are produced rapidly and kill the bacteria or virus
What happens when WBC produce antitoxins
The WBCs toxins counteract with the toxins produced but invading cells
What are pathogens?
Microorganisms which enter the body and cause disease
