Fighting Disease Flashcards
What type of defences does the body have to stop pathogens entering the body?
Physical and chemical barriers stop pathogens entering the body
List some physical barriers that stop pathogens entering the body
Skin, hairs and mucus in the nose and cells in the trachea and bronchi produce mucus that traps pathogens.
What are chemical barriers to pathogens?
The stomach produces hydrochloride acid and the eyes produce lysozyme in the tears
If pathogens make it into your body, what jumps in to destroy them
Immune system
What is the most important part of the immune system?
White blood cells
What are B-lymphocytes?
A type of white blood cell
Every pathogen has what in its surface?
Antigens
What are antibodies?
The antibodies lock on to invading pathogens. Aso it can be found and destroyed by white blood cells. The antibodies are specific to that pathogen and won’t lock on to any other pathogens.
