Fight Or Flight Response And PAS and SAM Flashcards
What is the fight or flight response
Evolutionary adaptation
-helps deal with physical threats that can be solved by fighting or running
Order of fight or flight response
- Stressor- triggers fight or flight response
-then the body releases adrenaline from the adrenal medulla (sympathetic nervous system)
-which suppresses blood at stomach so more can go to the working muscles, preparing you to fight or run.
Effects of fight or flight response
-^HR
- breathing
- sweating
- ^ blood oxygen to muscles
- dilated pupils
- lungs dilate to ^ oxygen intake
Sympathetic nervous system (SAM)
> amygdala - detects stressor And sends electric impulse to
> hypothalamus, activates
> sympathetic nervous system, stimulates
> adrenal medulla to release
> adrenaline that triggers
> fight or flight
HARRY, SEELY , ATE, ASHLEYS , FOOD
Order of Pituitary adrenal system (PAS) - happens one min after sympathetic to bring body back to homeostasis
Slower- cause hormone travel through blood stream
-Hypothalamus releases CRF
-pituitary gland releases
-ACTH, that activates
-adrenal cortex, which releases
-cortisol and glucose
Which slow down HR and put body back to rest.

Evaluation of fight or flight
✖️-doesn’t explain the freeze response when the first response to danger is to avoid the situation.
- women don’t adopt a fight or flight response cause it was historically used by men to fight of danger, but instead a ‘tend and befriend’ response. Beta bias
-argue if it is even useful today as were not faced with life threatening situations in modern life and the stress it causes is actually bad for our health as can lead to heart disease,
