Field recordings and prod features (cms 1) Flashcards
What are field recordings?
Field recordings = recording sounds out in the field. Allows you to sample interesting sounds, such as nature, objects, and actions like skateboarding.
Windsocks are essential for outdoor recordings.
What is sonification?
The process of taking data and turning it into sound. It is the use of non- speech audio to convey information or perceptualize data.
Auditory perception has advantages in temporal, spatial, amplitude, and frequency resolution that open possibilities as an alternative or complement to visualization techniques.
What is quantization?
Quantizing means moving notes recorded into a MIDI sequencer or DAW in line with the “grid” which makes a rhythmically imprecise performance end up perfect.
What are tools for collaboration?
Standalone and plugin DAWS
Content management systems
Browser-based DAWS
Mobile apps
Audio streaming plugins
Established DAWS
Marketplace platforms
Synchronous VS. Asynchronous collaboration
Asynchronous = Working on a project, then you walk away and leave it. Then another person comes and adds something to it.
Synchronous = People working on a project at the same time. Can involve a call as people discuss ideas whilst working.
3 major elements of online music collaboration?
Technical – practically completing the task.
Emotional – contributions that are uneven.
Legal – commercial implications. Copyright.
Manipulating field recordings
Time stretching – with the use of re-pitch warping algorithm.
Reversing audio.
Slicing audio to a new MIDI track.
