Trope
A common type of plot point, character, scene, etc., that recurs in many works of fiction
Stereotype
An overly generalized and inaccurate belief (often about a group in society)
Glorification
Believing that something is very valuable
Stigmatization
Believing that something/someone is bad and should be excluded from mainstream society (often referring to a particular group or type of behavior).
Target demographic
The audience that a work of fiction is designed to appeal to
Plot armor
Refers to the way in which authors write main characters who miraculously survive many dangerous situations, while killing off less important characters.
Rags-to-riches
A common type of plot, in which the main character goes from poverty to extreme wealth
Anti-hero
A character with evil or villainous traits who the audience nonetheless sympathizes with (and may treat as a hero)
Vigilantism
The act of enforcing the law and investigating and punishing offenses and crimes without legal authority.
Bildungsroman
A coming of age story, in which a main character starts as immature or naive, and ends up growing up.
Consumerism
A social narrative that glorifies buying and consuming products (especially expensive products)
Textual evidence
Extracts or examples from a text that back up an interpretation
Introspection
The act of thinking about oneself and examining one’s beliefs and preferences (often critically)
Satire
A genre of fiction that tends to mock and criticize, often aimed at other works of fiction (but also at group soif people, beliefs, etc.)
Genre
A type of fiction that shares certain characteristics (e.g. comedy, drama, romance)
Medium
When referring to fiction or art, this means the format the art is presented in (e.g. the medium of film, the medium of music)
Wakanda
A fictional African country in the Marvel cinematic universe which is isolated and miraculously technologically advanced.
Muggles
In the Harry Potter universe, this refers to people who don’t have a the gift of magic
MCU
The marvel cinematic universe- set of superhero movies that occur in the same universe.
The author is dead
The idea that the intent of the author of a work of fiction doesn’t matter and that audiences can interpret the work in any way they want
