Fibrous Joints Flashcards
Name characteristics of the fibrous joints called sutures.
•They are composed of a thin layer of dense irregular connective tissue;
•occur only between bones of the skull.
sutures play important roles for what?
Growth and shock absorption in the skull
This joint is where in which there is a complete fusion of two separate bones into one. Sutures are completely fused by age six.
synostosis
Describe the fibrous joint called syndesmoses.
A greater distance between articulating surfaces.
Greater dense irregular connective tissue than a suture.
What are the types of syndesmoses?
Interosseous ligament, interosseous membrane, gomphosis
What is periodontal disease
Inflammation and degeneration of the gums, periodontal ligament, and bone.
What is interosseous membrane so important?
•defining the range of motion between the neighboring bones
• provide an increased attachment surface for muscles that produce movements of the ankle and wrist and the digits of the hand and foot.
What are the similarities with interosseous ligament and interosseous membrane.
They permit limited movement
What is an example of an interosseous ligament
anterior tibiofibular ligament
What is a interosseous membrane?
substantial sheet of dense irregular connective tissue that binds neighboring long bones and permits slight movement.
Example membranes occur between the radius and ulna in the forearm and between the tibia and fibula in the leg
What joint is the name of the cone shaped peg fits into a cavity with a small amount of dense irregular connective tissue. Example being the roots of teeth.
Gomohosis or dentoalveolae joint.
The dense irregular connective tissue between a tooth and its dental alveolus is the what?
periodontal ligament.
