Fibrinoid degeneration (dystrophy) Flashcards
What type of dystrophy is fibrinoid degeneration?
Extracellular/mesenchymal dysproteinemia
What causes fibrinoid degeneration?
Long-lasting hypoxia, toxication, metabolic conditions, hypovitaminosis (C,E,K), allergic diseases, endocrine dysfunctions
chronic inflammation –> localised fibrinoid degeneration
What is fibrinoid and how does it form?
Connective tissue integrates + collagen fibres swell and break down
–> These fibres + ground substance soak into plasma fibrin and form fibrinoid
Can you see external signs of fibrinoid degeneration?
Not visible externally, only microscopically
How does fibrinoid degeneration affect the organ?
Causes functional problems, fibrinoid can later be replaced by connective tissue or hyalin (hyalinosis). Can also lead to fibrinoid necrosis.
