Fibers Flashcards
Concentrated water based pigments must be used in combination with a base/ extender so that the pigment adheres to fabric.
The ratio of extender to pigment determines the shade and depth of color
The way to use pigment base extender
Water based fabric inks set with heat
Textile pigment
The white substance used to hold pigment and extend the use on fabric
Pigment base/extender
Degree to which the color fades when washed
Washfast
Degree to which the color fades from light
Lightfast
The brand of fiber reactive dyes we used in class
Procion dyes
Low impact dye used for cellulose and protein fibers.
Fiber reactive dyes
Plant based based fibers such as cotton, linen, ramie, hemp, viscose rayon
Cellulose fibers
Animal based fiber such as wool or silk
Protein fibers
Powdered dye mixed into a liquid solution
Dye solution
A synthetic nitrogen compound used as a humectant in printing and painting with all classes of dyes
Urea
Urea mixed with water to make a dye solution. In class we add 2 cups of urea to 1 gallon of water to make chemical water.
Chemical Water
Sodium Carbonate. Used as an alkali fixative for Reactive Dyes. Also used to scour fabric before dyeing.
Dye Activator/Sodium Acetate
A concentrated liquid wetting agent and surfactant compatible with all dye classifications.
Synthrapol
A colorless water-based resist for silk painting.
Sabra Silk Resist
A soft, fine, lightweight silk. Varies from 5mm - 10mm
Habutai
A soft silk fabric with a lustrous face with a dull back, made with a satin weave. Varies from 10mm-18mm
Charmuese
A Japanese unit of weight used by the textile industry as the standard way to measure silk fabrics.
Momme
Comes from the core of rattan, we used 4mm round for the warp and 2mm for the weft
Reed
A vine like plant that grows in Southeast Asia
Rattan
A fiber obtained from the leaves of the raffia plant, used in traditional basket weaving
Raffia
To wind in continuing, regularly spaced rings above one another
Coiling
A structure made with plain weave
Plaiting
To create a structure wrapping weft around a warp
Twining
A loosely twisted, slightly glossy 6 strand thread usually of cotton but also manufactured in silk and rayon
Embroidery floss
Used to keep embroidery taut while embroidering
Embroidery hoop
