Q

Fiber Optic is composed of what components?

A
  • A plastic or glass core that carries the signal
  • A cladding surround the core that maintains the signal as the cable bends
  • A sheath that protects the cladding and the core

Q

Single-mode

A
  • Transfer data through the core using a single light ray (mode)
  • Supports large amount of data
  • Core diameter is around 10 microns
  • Cable lengths can extend to a great distance

Q

Multi-mode

A
  • Transfers data through the core using multiple light rays
  • Core diameter is around 50 to 100 microns
  • Cable lengths are limited in distance

Q

ST Connector

A
  • Used with single mode and multi-mode cabling
  • Keyed, bayonet-type connector
  • AKA push-in connector or a twist connector
  • Each wire has a separate connector
  • Nickel plated with a ceramic ferrule to ensure proper alignment and prevent light ray deflection
  • Necessary to polish the exposed fiber tip to ensure that light is passed on form one cable to the next with no dispersion

SC Connector

A
  • Used with single mode and multi-mode cabling
  • Push on. pull off connector type that uses a locking tab to maintain connection
  • Each wire has a separate connector
  • Uses a ceramic ferrule to ensure proper core alignment and prevent light ray deflection
  • Necessary to polish the exposed fiber tip

Q

LC Connector

A
  • Used with single mode and multi-mode cabling
  • Composed of a plastic connector with a locking tab, similar to an RJ-45 connector
  • Single connector with two ends keeps the cables in place
  • Uses a ceramic ferrule to ensure proper core alignment and prevent light ray deflection
  • Half the size of other fiber optic connectors

Q

MT-RJ Connector

A
  • Used with single mode and multi-mode cabling
  • Composed of plastic connector with a locking tab
  • Uses metal guide pins to ensure it is properly aligned
  • Uses a ceramic ferrule to ensure proper core alignment and prevent light ray deflection
