What is FGM?
Defined as the partial or total removal of the external genitalia in normal/healthy female genital tissue
What are the four different types of FGM?
- Clitoridectomy
- Excision
- Infibulation
- Other
Where is FGM most prevalent?
is most prevalent in Africa with countries such as somalia, egypt and guinea having the highest reported occurrences.
What is the law on FGM in the UK?
It is an offence to perform AND assist in the UK
It is also an offence to sew a woman back up together once they have been uncut – deinfibulation- in the UK eg for childbirth reasons
It is mandatory to report
It is mandatory to report to the police if the woman is under 18
What are the complications of FGM?
Keloid scar Infection Dyspareunia Dysmenorrhea Anorgasmia PTSD Recurrent UTI Chronic pain
what are the complications of FGM for birth?
can result in episiotomy, c-section and PPH during child birth
