Causes of Fever
besides infxn! :-)
- neoplasm
- collagen vascular disease
- CNS lesion (stroke, ICH, trauma)
- illicit drugs (cocaine, ecstasy [MDMA], meth)
- withdrawal (delirium tremens, benzo w/d)
- factitious fever
- medications…
Medications that cause Fever
Antibiotics:
INH, nitrofurantoin (Macrobid), PCNs/ceph, rifampin, sulfonamides
AntiNeoplastic:
bleomycin, streptozocin
Cardiac:
hydralazine, methyldopa, nifedipine, procainamide, quinidine
AntiEpileptics:
phenytoin, carbamazepine
Randoms:
NSAIDs, Barbituates, Cimetidine, Iodides
Relationship between Pulse + Fever
Temperature:
for every 1° Farenheit or 0.6° Celcius
Heart Rate:
will increase by 10 bpm
Pulse-Temperature Dissociation
- typhoid
- malaria
- Legionnaires’ disease
- mycoplasma
- early septic shock
Fever of Unknown Origin
T > 38.3
documented on several occasions
over three weeks
with evaluation in the hospital for one week
TB = 30% Malignancy = 30%
