What is Tithe?
A 10% tax that everyone pays to the church, if not payed God would be unhappy with them
Why was Feudalism made?
The system of Feudalism was to help the people of Europe resist the constant attacks of Muslims, Magyars, and Vikings
How did Feudalism work?
Different levels of people in the government gave and received different things.
Knights code?
Code of Chivalry
Fief and Vassal?
A vassal was a group that gave homage to peasants and lords, in exchange for food shelter, rent money, and manual labor
Fief was a plot of land, granted to a vassal
Manor?
A manor house was the plot of land where the serfs lived and worked, and they almost never left their manor house
A Lord?
A lord was a landowner, who was granted land and peasants by the King, and passed it on to vassals
Pope?
“God’s representative on Earth”
Pope’s power over king?
Pope could excommunicate someone, to cut them off from the church, making them open from attacks
Pope’s power over region?
Pope has interdiction, where they can cut off a whole region from the church, making the whole region mad at the king
Church Hierachy?
1) Pope
2) Cardinals
3) Arch Bishops
4) Bishops
5) Priests
Church spiritual power?
Controlled people’s faith, and managed marriage and baptism
Church political power?
Church had big influence over kings and rulers because of excommunication/interdiction
Church laws?
Canon law, which was a lot more lenient for people who worked for the church
What did priests do?
Were in charge of one church, did weddings, confessions, release from guilt(absolution), baptism, last words, and spiritual advice
What did monasteries provide?
Monks and Nuns ran monasteries, which were like hospitals to help the sick, often people with leprosy, and charity to the poor.
King?
Had absolute power, gave fief and peasants to Lords?
Lords?
Lords pledged loyalty to the king and military aid, and gave food, shelter, and protection to vassals and knights
Vassals and Knights?
Vassals and Knights payed homage and gave military services to Lords and Serfs, while also giving food and shelter to Serfs
