Emporer
Monarch in Japan; was a figurehead; respected but had no real power.
Shogun
Most powerful military leader; real ruler of Japan; govt. called the “Shogunate.”
Daimyo
Military ruler of a territory; used their samurai to protect peasants who paid them and were loyal.
Samurai
Warriors, bodyguards, and protectors of Daimyo’s territory; bound to the Daimyo by a code of honor called Bushido; less than 10% of the population.
Peasants
Largest social group in Japan; legally bound to work land for their Daimyo in exchange for protection; paid most taxes and led harsh lives.
Chonin
Craftspeople and merchant traders; considered socially lower than peasants, but lead better lives and made more money; paid less taxes.
Shinto
Japanese “way of the gods” in religion.
Etiquette
A code of correct behavior or appearance.
Feudalism
Social and economic system in which peasant farmers worked land for a Daimyo and paying taxes in exchange for protection.
Bushido
Samurai code of behavior, called “way of the warrior.”
Kabuki
Skits about urban life performed by townspeople.
Haiku
Type of poetry that does not express ideas but presents images.
