Fetal Heart Rate Flashcards
(Position of baby) Cephalic =
Head down
(position of baby) Breech =
Head up
If baby is in breech position where will heart rate monitor go?
Upper abdomen
If baby is in Cephalic position where does heart monitor go?
Lower abdomen
What is a internal fetal monitor called?
Fetal Scalp Electrode (FSE)
Where does contraction monitor go?
Higher abdomen
When is a FSE used?
High risk pregnancies
How is FSE placed? Risks? When is the only time it can be placed?
Through the cervix on babies scalp. It can only be used after amniotic waters have ruptured and dilation is 2+. Risk of infection due to foreign object.
Normal baseline fetal heart rate =
110-160bpm
(EKG strips) Variability=
How wiggly or jiggly the line is on heart rate monitor paper
(EKG Strips) The more wiggly the line on the heart rate monitor= more variability which means
Happy baby- neurological system in tact
(EKG Strips) Types of variability in FHRM (like a stop light) Absent variability=
Not jiggly- not good, baby is not responding and is at risk for major complications and death. Baby needs to come out immediately.
(EKG) Minimal variability (FHR) =
Flatter line that looks “sleepy/sad” less happy of baby. Baby is sleeping or in trouble.
(EKG) Moderate variability (FHR)=
Normal and desired finding. Green light. Moderate -most desired.
(EKG) Marked variability =
Jagged jiggles in the lines= stressed out baby. But generally is seen as baby is being pushed out so that is okay.
