Fetal development Flashcards
How long is Gestation (fetal development)
9 months or 40 weeks
First trimester
By the end, 93 days, all major organ systems have started to develop
Cleavage
First cellular divisions
Day 4
Implantation into uterus
Day 6
Blastocyst
Mass of cells become embryo
Release hCG
hCG
Maintains levels of progesterone so menses does not occur
Week 4
Plancentation
Umbilical cord connects baby to placenta
Placenta supplies nutrients respiration excretion n and hormones to baby
Within placenta the moms and baby’s blood never mix
Placenta takes over progesterone production and hCG stops
If if placenta does not take over progesterone production
Then hCG stops and menses occurs causing miscarriage
Second trimester
Organ and organ systems continue to develop to near completion
Body looks distinctly human
Third trimester
Rapid fetal growth is characteristic of this phase
Most of the organ systems are fully functional even with 2 months to go
21- 30 weeks (3rd tri)
Substantial increase of weight
May survive if born prematurely at 27-28 weeks but hypothalamic temp regulation and lung production of surfactant are still inadequate, ( can’t inhale and exhale air without lungs collapsing)
