fertility measurements Flashcards
How is completed fertility measured?
Average number of children born by a cohort of women and the end of their reproductive age (roughly 50)
How is parity progression ratio (PPR) measured?
proportuion of women (or couples) with at least N number of children who go on to have at least N+1 children (in lifetime or in a set number of years)
What does P01 mean? (PPR value)
proprotion of childless couples who go on to have one child
What is measured in a prospective cohort study?
In a particular period of time, all the fertility events happening in that time
How is crude birth rate measured?
ratio of live births to the average population in a set time period OR
(births/population) x 1000
How is gerenal fertility rate measured?
(births in time period/number of women aged 15-49 at midperiod of the year) x 1000
How is age specific fertility rate calculated?
(births to women aged x/ number of women in age group x at midpoint) x 1000
How is total fertility rate measured?
Age specific fertility rates are captured and plotted over time, assuming that women now will behave in the same trends as the older women of this time period capture.
What type of measure is total fertility rate an example of
synthetic cohort measure
What are the three examples of spatial patterning of fertility?
Starting, stopping and spacing
What are the four diff methods of collecting birth numbers?
registration systems (birth certs), population registers, census, surveys
What does P12 mean (PPR value)
The proportion of women who have one child and go on to have a second in a set time frame
