Q

Why are fertilisers important ?

A

Fertilisers are important because they are needed to increase food production as the population is increasing.

Q

What does potassium deficiency lead to ? And what does this result in ?

A

Dark brown scorching and chlorides (yellowing) of the outside of the leaves.

Results in less water circulation, plants are then more susceptible to drought and temperature change.

Q

Is nitrogen a relatively reactive or unreactive gas ? And what does this mean ?

A

Unreactive gas so it is difficult for plants to use nitrogen directly from the atmosphere.

12
Q

Why is it extremely difficult for plants to use nitrogen straight from the atmosphere ?

A

Because nitrogen has three bonds between its atoms, this triple bond is very strong and this is what makes nitrogen unreactive (stable).

16
Q

What is nitrogen fixation ?

A

This is when atmospheric nitrogen (N2) is converted into useful ‘nitrogen-containing’ nutrients for plants.

17
Q

What is a fertiliser ?

A

a chemical or natural substance added to soil or land to increase its fertility
