Fertilisers Flashcards
What can fertilisers be used for ?
To increase the concentration of certain elements which may be lacking in the soil.
Why are fertilisers important ?
Fertilisers are important because they are needed to increase food production as the population is increasing.
Name three of the elements found in essential nutrient compounds
Nitrogen (N)
Phosphorus (P)
Potassium (K)
Nice Little Pupils Really Know Fertiliser Facts
Nitrogen Leaves Phosphorus Roots Potassium Fruit Flowers
What does nitrogen help?
Leaves
What does phosphorus help?
Roots
What does potassium help?
Fruit and Flowers
What does potassium deficiency lead to ? And what does this result in ?
Dark brown scorching and chlorides (yellowing) of the outside of the leaves.
Results in less water circulation, plants are then more susceptible to drought and temperature change.
What does phosphorus deficient plants look like ?
Phosphorus deficient plants remain poor in size and leaf tips look burnt.
What do nitrogen deficient plants look like ?
Spindly yellow leaves or plants
Is nitrogen a relatively reactive or unreactive gas ? And what does this mean ?
Unreactive gas so it is difficult for plants to use nitrogen directly from the atmosphere.
Why is it extremely difficult for plants to use nitrogen straight from the atmosphere ?
Because nitrogen has three bonds between its atoms, this triple bond is very strong and this is what makes nitrogen unreactive (stable).
Name the Diatomic molecules
Fancy - Fluerine Clancy - Chlorine Owes - Oxygen Her - Hydrogen Nothing - Nitrogen But - Bromine Ice - Iodine
How do plants absorb nutrients ? And what do they need to do this ?
Through their roots, they need water to do this.
What must fertilisers be in water ?
Soluble
