Fertilisers Flashcards
what do they do
improve soil structure reducing soil erosion and increasing the water holding ability of the soil
what are natural fertilisers made up of
form of dead and decomposing remains and waste products such as manure
limiting factor of these
released over long time periods and are not very concentrated so large amounts are needed
What are artificial fertilisers made up of
inorganic matter in the form of powders or pellets that contain pure compounds such as ammonium nitrate
advantage 1
easier to apply how much and to measure the effect it will have on crops
advantage 2
concentrated so smaller amounts are needed decreasing transport costs
advantage 3
easy to apply and are clean and easy to handle
disadvantage 1
reduces species diversity leading to mono culture
disadvantage 2
high conc of nutrients can affect groundwater going into rivers leading to eutrophication
what is eutrophication
lead to harmful algae bloom due to high conc of nutrients in ground water going into rivers etc which can block sunlight and deplete the oxygen in the water layer
