Ferrous Metals Flashcards
Name the different strength characteristics of metal
Tensile. Compressive Shear Torsional Flexural Fatigue Impact
What is the term for a metal that has been stretched to a point that it does not return to its original shape?
Elastic limit, also know as yield strength.
What is described as a metals ability to resist cutting, penetration or abrasion?
Hardness.
What is meant by the term Malleability?
A materials ability to be formed or shaped without cracking or breaking.
If a material can be drawn into wire stock, extrusions or rods, it is know as?
Ductile.
If a material is not malleable or ductile, what is it?
Brittle.
Describe toughness.
A materials ability to resist tearing or breaking when it is bent or stretched. Opposed to brittle.
What is steel?
A material composed primarily of Iron with at least Carbon assed as an alloying element.
What are the characteristics of 2320 steel?
2 Nickel alloy
3, % of alloying element
20, % in 100ths of Carbon.
What effect does sulphur have on steel, how is it controlled?
Sulphur makes steel brittle when rolled or forged. It must be removed during refining or neutralised by adding manganese.
what elements increase yield strength in steel?
Phosphorus and Nickel.
How does silicon effect steel?
It increases hardness in small quantities and improves ductility (allows the steel to be drawn)
What element increases hardness, strength, improves wear and corrosion resistance?
Chromium/
High strength, ductility, shock resistance and toughness are characteristics of what alloys?
Chromium and nickel.
Austenitic, Martensitic, and Ferric are all types of what?
Stainless steel.
