Ferrous metals Flashcards
What is a ferrous metal ?
An alloy which is magnetic and contains iron as its main ingredient
What ferrous metal is used in aircraft structures?
Steel
What is steel made from ?
Iron + carbon
How is rust formed ?
When oxygen reacts with iron
Why is iron mixed with carbon ?
To prevent or slow down oxidisation
What are properties of steel ?
High density and susceptibility to corrosion
What is toughness of a metal ?
Ability to resist tearing/breaking when bent or stretched
What is hardness of a metal ?
Ability to resist cutting, penetration or abrasion
What is ductility of a metal ?
Ability to be drawn into wire stock, extrusions or rods
What fusibility of a metal ?
The joining of metals through heating and melting
What is an alloying ingredient of steel ?
Carbon
What are the benefits of carbon in steel ?
Allows steel to be heat-treated
What are the 3 grades of steel ?
Austenic, ferritic, martensitic
What is stainless steel ?
Classification of corrosion resistant steels that contain large amounts of chromium and nickel
What is SAE ?
Society of automotive engineers
What does the 4 digit index system for steel alloys represent?
Represents chemical composition standards
What metal is not suitable as a structural material?
Pure Iron
Why is steel heat treated?
To control the distribution of carbon
What is an eutectoid ?
A metal that can exist In more than one form at the same temperature e.g. steel
What is critical temp ?
Temp at which a phase change occurs in a metal during heating or cooling
When quenching what determines the speed a material cools ?
The medium (water, oil or some cases air)
