It is rare to get eosinophilia associated with heartworm.
Serology is also an option when looking for adult D.
immitis antigen but false negatives are possible
Circulating microfilariae are only present in around half
of affected animals which makes the modified Knott’s test of limited use in ferrets.
Tx of Ferret with Heartworm
Ferrets with symptomatic cardiac disease due to heartworm
may require stabilisation before an adulticide is given. Stabilisation with oxygen, frusemide, or enalapril.
Treatment requires an adulticide and prednisolone
