Femur to Pelvis Flashcards
- longest and strongest bone
- frequent source of pathology when trauma occurs
Femur
Four essential parts of proximal femur
- head
- neck
- greater trochanter
- lesser trochanter
- rounded and smooth for articulation with the hip bones
- contains depression or pit, near its center called the fovea capitis
Head of the femur
A major ligament called the ligament of the head of the femur, or the ligament ________ is attached to the head of the femur
capitis femoris
strong pyramidal process of bone that connects the head with body/shaft in the region of the trochanter
neck of the femur
a large prominence that is located superiorly and laterally to the femoral shaft and is palpable as a bony landmark
greater trochanter
smaller, blunt, conical prominence that projects medially and posteriorly from the junction of the neck and shaft of the femur
lesser trochanter
the trochanters are joined posteriorly by a thick ridge calle a
intertrochanteric crest
means a basin and serves as the base of the trunk and forms the connection between the vertebral column and lower limbs
Pelvis
The pelvis consists of four bones, the
- two hip bones (ossa coxae or innominate bones)
- one sacrum
- one coccyx
they are considered as parts of the distal vertebral column
sacrum & coccyx
three divisions of hip bones
- ilium
- ischium
- pubis
the fusion occurs in the area of the
acetabulum
deep, cup-shaped cavity that accepts the head of the femur to form the hip joint
acetabulum
- largest of the three divisions
- located superior to the acetabulum
ilium
