Femur Flashcards
Trochanteric Fossa
15
Location: A depression on the medial side of the greater trochanter
Attachments: Obturator externus muscle
Gluteal Tuberosity
12
Location: A roughened area on the posterior femur, extending from the greater trochanter down toward the linea aspera
Attachments: Gluteus maximus muscle
Lateral Supracondylar Line
11
Location: A ridge extending from the linea aspera to the lateral epicondyle
Attachments: Short head of the biceps femoris muscle
Intercondylar Notch (Intercondylar Fossa)
9
Location: Deep groove between the medial and lateral condyles at the distal femur
Attachments: Cruciate ligaments (anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL))
Articulations: None directly, but provides space for ligament attachment in the knee joint
Medial Supracondylar Line
6
Location: A ridge extending from the linea aspera to the medial epicondyle
Attachments: Adductor magnus muscle
Spiral Line
4
Location: A ridge that spirals from the intertrochanteric line down to the medial aspect of the linea aspera
Attachments: Vastus medialis muscle
Medial Border
N
Location: The medial edge of the femoral shaft
Attachments: Vastus medialis muscle
Articulations: None directly
Adductor Tubercle
M
Location: A small bony prominence on the medial femur, above the medial epicondyle
Attachments: Adductor magnus muscle
Medial Epicondyle
L
Location: A bony prominence on the medial distal femur
Attachments: Medial collateral ligament (MCL)
Articulations: None directly
Medial Condyle
K
Location: Rounded projection on the medial distal femur
Attachments: Medial head of gastrocnemius muscle
Articulations: Articulates with the medial condyle of the tibia
More info: Rounder and larger than the lateral condyle
Patellar Articular Surface
J
Location: Smooth anterior surface of the distal femur
Attachments: None directly
Articulations: Articulates with the patella
Lateral Condyle
I
Location: Rounded projection on the lateral distal femur
Attachments: Gastrocnemius (lateral head), popliteus muscle
Articulations: Articulates with the lateral condyle of the tibia
More info: Smaller and slightly flatter than medial condyle
Lateral Epicondyle
H
Location: A bony prominence on the lateral distal femur
Attachments: Lateral collateral ligament (LCL)
Linea Aspera
5
Location: A prominent ridge running longitudinally down the posterior shaft of the femur
Attachments: Multiple (adductor) muscles, including adductor longus, adductor magnus, vastus lateralis, and vastus medialis
Lateral Border
G
Location: The lateral edge of the femoral shaft
Attachments: Vastus lateralis muscle
Shaft
F
Location: Long, cylindrical, central portion of the femur
Attachments: Various muscles including vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and adductors
More info: Triangluar in shape and widens as it nears the condyles
Intertrochanteric Crest
13
Location: A ridge on the posterior femur connecting the greater and lesser trochanters
Attachments: Quadratus femoris muscle
More Info: More visable on cx-ray that the intertrochanteric line
Intertrochanteric Line
E
Location: Anterior ridge between the greater and lesser trochanters
Attachments: Iliofemoral ligament, vastus medialis muscle
Lesser Trochanter
O
Location: Medial and slightly posterior
Attachments: Psoas muscle from the lumbar spine
Other info: not palpable
Greater Trochanter
D
Location: Large, lateral prominence on the proximal femur
Attachments: Gluteus medius, gluteus minimus, piriformis, and other hip muscles
Other info: Palpable, sits on the same plane as the symphisis pubis
(GT = falling off the mattress in the tent, very sore)
Angle of Inclination
Where the femoral neck joints the shaft at an angle of approximately 125º
Neck of the Femur
C
Location: Narrow region connecting the head to the shaft
Attachments: No direct muscular attachments but serves as a passage for blood vessels
Additional Info: Common site for hip fractures, about 5cm long, runs oblique at 15-20º posterior and lateral
Head of the Femur
B
Location: The rounded, proximal end of the femur
Attachments: Covered in articular cartilage, attaches to the acetabulum via the ligamentum teres
Articulations: Forms the hip joint by articulating with the acetabulum of the pelvis
Fovea
A
Location: A small depression in the head of the femur
Attachments: Ligament of the head of the femur (ligamentum teres)
Articulations: None directly, but it contributes to hip joint stability
