feminists Flashcards
feminist views on gender roles
- disagree with wilmott and young and say gender roles have not become joint
- society’s patriarchal, men and women aren’t equal in the family as women occupy the subordinate position in both family and society
- research shows that women do domestic labour and most dont enjoy it
OAKLEY
- family’s not symmetrical as men dont do equal amount of housework
- she interviewed 40 housewives in London and 15% of husbands have high level participation in housework and 25% in childcare
- men help with more enjoyable aspects of childcare
- 19th century women were part of labour force and since then they’ve been confined to home therefore housewives roles are socially constructed, not natural.
- even when women work their jobs are low paid extensions of the housewife role e.g. nursing
BOULTON
- willmott and young exaggerate mens contribution
- men carry some childcare tasks but its still the womans responsibility so the family’s not symmetrical
WARDE AND HETHERINGTON
- sex typing of domestic tasks remain strong (women and men carry out gender specific roles)
- men only do routine female tasks when women aren’t around
FERRI AND SMITH
- women face dual burden of paid work and unpaid housewife as if they work, they still do the most housework and childcare
- family’s patriarchal as men benefit from womens earnings and domestic labour
DUNCOMBE AND MARSDEN
-women do the triple shift –> paid employment, domestic labour and emotional work
HOCHSCHILD
-women required to do emotional work (resolving issues etc)
SOUTHERTON
-women responsible for managing family’s quality time which is difficult to find time where everyone’s free due to recent social changes like flexible working hours.
DUNNE
- division of labor continues due to gender scripts
- straight couples are under pressure to conform to masc/ fem. gender scripts by doing different domestic tasks, whereas for lesbian couples it doesn’t exist so their relationship’s symmetrical
GATRELL
- men are fully involved in kids bringing but it can be argued that they do this to avoid doing housework
- men are more interested in kids upbringing now because:
1. their dads were uninvolved
2. marriages can break down but parents relationships with kids can last forever
MORRIS
-researched families where women worked and men were unemployed and found that men saw housework as women’s work and they refused to do it as since they’re unemployed, it would’ve undermined their masculinity even more
RAMOS (more recent study of Morris)
-found that unemployed men did as much domestic labour as their partner
DEX AND WARD
-dads spend more time with kids but when the kids are ill, the mum takes care of them
BRAUN, VINCENT AND BALL
- mums are main carers of kids and men are background fathers as they only help with childcare out of sense of responsibility to their partner, not because they want to be a good dad
- men hold a provider ideology- see themselves as breadwinners
- women see themselves as primary carers due to intensive mothering ideas from media
MAN YEE KAN
- women still do more housework than men but theres trend to greater equality as men now do more housework than their dads
- better educated women do less housework as they expect more from their partners
