Society is patriarchal (male dominated). Inequality is based on gender and sexual oppression. For example, men oppress women through physical violence, restricted employment opportunities and the burden of childcare responsibilities.

The assumption that women will bear the primary responsibility for childcare affects the length of time women spend in work.
Women’s domestic situation reduces the amount they can earn and makes them economically dependent on males, further reinforcing male power over women.

Critics of the feminist argument argue that they fail to explain levels of inequality among women. The poverty of women can depend on issues to do with social class and ethnicity. Eg. white women tend to earn more than black and Asian women.
