Q

how are MF different/similar to TM?

A
  • unlike traditional marxists like Engels and Zaretsky who focus on the oppression of the prol, MF focus on the oppression of women and how cap benefit from the the oppression of women not being paid as a housewife
  • like TM, MF define TNF as family, women are oppressed in family

marxists feminists views

A
  • because the man is the breadwinner, the women is economically dependant for needs of subsistance
  • this gives the man power and leaves the women powerless
  • this benefits cap because cap socially constructed SCR
  • this contrasts with functionalists belief that SCR is natural

Q

How does this benefit capitalists? (1) social reproduction of the labour power

A

this is performed in 2 ways:
a) by women being an unpaid housewife, this women helps cap by serving the current generation of workers (male prol)
-cap motives are profit/money
-they want effective/efficient workers
-women looks after well-being of current cap workforce for free and this saves cap money
b) they provide the next generation of workers
-cap need workers
-in cap society women are socialised by cap ideology to have children
- as a result, women conform to being a housewife and having children

Q

AO3 of (1)

A
  1. it is criticised because of the view that women produce the next generation of workers, statistics of birthrate has declined, reason why? childless women
  2. built on the premise that all families are all TNF based on SCR, whereas actually family diversity is the norm and women are in paid work which refutes the claim that women are at home looking after the current generation

Q

How does this benefit capitalists? (2) Ansley- women as an unpaid housewife benefits capitalists by acting as a ‘safety valve’

A

-a women stops a man from ‘losing it’
-the male prol suffer from alienation (because of the deskilled nature of work) and exploitation (because of the long hours and low wages)
-this causes anger and stress, which could result in a rebellion to overthrow cap
-a women prevents this from happening; by being an unpaid housewife she is put into a position of powerlessness
-this allows a man to release his frustration caused by cap through domestic violence, and because women cant leave, they absorb the male’s anger
-Ansley refers to women as the “takers of shit”

Q

AO3 of (2)

A
  1. MF criticised because not all men are violent and the majority of men are against DV
  2. Greer disagrees that cap doesnt cause DV, patriarchy does
  3. not all men work, in post-modernity, JCR is most common
  4. the nature of cap work is so exploititive that it causes men to relieve anger on women, then women who work would do the same to men. the nature of work has also changed and there are social policy laws to protect workers, so it is not as bad

Q

How does this benefit capitalists? (3) by being an unpaid housewife in the traditional nuclear family, women serve the needs of capitalists by acting as a reserve army of labour

A

women can be used as a reserve for work, cap have a whole army to work if needed
-work is very deskilled
-allows people to be replaced easily
-women can replace men if needed
-ensures capitalist profit is unaffected

Q

AO3 of (3)

A
  1. women are used as a RAOL- evident in wilsons study in WW2
    - capitalists profits were threatened because men had to go to war, set up nursery’s, so nursery’s were set up for women to put their children in them and go to work in the factory’s
    - when men returned, women were forced back into the role of and UHW since the nursery’s were shutdown
    - this can be criticised because it is based on the premise that women dont work and in post-modernity the majority of women work

Q

How does this benefit capitalists? (4) Benson- women being and unpaid housewife reduces the bargaining of male power

A

-in the TNF, men are the BW and women and children are ED on man for NOS

Q

Radical feminists views

A

-RF view the extent on gender inequality as significant even in post-modern society
-they believe society is patriarchal meaning women are oppressed as society is male-dominated
-they also believe we are socialised with patriarchal values and ideology

Q

what do RF think is the cause of oppression?

A
  • they blame men as the cause if oppression and regard men as the ‘enemy’
  • they believe that the TNF is the worst family for women as it is the most oppressive since a women is ED on a man which leaves them powerless
  • they think marriage is very oppressive/patriarchal- because women are viewed as posessions (obeying husband, father giving of daughter to another man, taking the husbands surname)
  • they believe in the darkside (domestic violence)

Q

Dobash and Dobash study

A

-found that DV is widespread-very common
-and most of the time is this the woman as the victim and the man as the perpertrator
-they interviewd women in refuge
-found that the most common trigger for a man to cause DV is when a woman questioned his authority
-this reinforces the fact that it is due to patriarchy

17
Q

what is the ‘darkside’?

A

1 in 4 women are raped in marriage
- shows that womens victimisation is because of patriarchy
- due to the sexual desires of men- woman seen as sex objects

18
Q

AO3 to support that the TNF/marriage/heterosexuality is patriarchal

A
  1. petition for divorce- 75% of woman instigate divorce
  2. Greer (2000)- unmarried woman are happier than married woman
  3. official statistics prove woman suffer from darkside- woman are 8x liklier to suffer from DV than men
19
Q

RF solution

A

extreme- men are the enemy so we should have an all female society (matrilocal society and households)
-lesbianism should be the norm- seperate schools and work because they experience a “glass-ceiling”- they can only go so far with a promotion despite out-performing boys in all forms of education

20
Q

Dunne (RF)

A

-researched how the DDOL is divided in lesbian households
-found that it is equal and it contrasts with heterosexual relationships as they are very unequal- the domestic labour falls on women
-this is because people are socialised into gender scripts- girls are feminine, maternal and domesticated so men dont do housework
-because society is homophobic, and there is a lack of representation in the media, there are no gender scripts for same-sex couples and thats why their labour is equal

21
Q

AO3 of RF

A
  1. not everyone is lesbian, discriminates against heterosexual women
  2. reproductive roles are not pragmatic (not practical)
  3. it is too unrealistic and too radical
  4. RF refer to all men as the enemy however the reality is that most men are against DV
  5. they ignore female violence
  6. LF such as Sommerville criticise them as woman have made progress, there is more gender equality and they exaggerate the darkside
22
Q

Liberal feminist views

A

-unlike MF and RF, LF dont blame anyone and argue that the reason woman are oppressed is society’s norms and values and their social policies
-it encourages inequality in terms of maternity/ paternity as only woman have the right to stay at home and this reinforces patriarchy, e.g. early education policies- sewing/cooking

23
Q

LF’s MOP view

A

-unlike RF, LF adopt a march of progress perspective and believe woman have made progress in family/household and work
in the family- studies by willmott and young and Gershuny
1.scr——>jcr——->more equal
2.in some families, the woman is the main BW (not gershuny)
3.social policiess have led to more gender equality:
in 1991 rape in marriage is made illegal and maternity/paternity leave went from two weeks to below a year
health issues- recovary of womans bodies

24
Q

LF soloution

A

-remove all forms of discrimination/sexism of both sexes by reforming social policies
-so it is illegal to tax tampons
-and in turn norms and values will change e.g. -the equal pay act and the sex discrimination act- as a result of these two laws, women were encouraged to enter the workplace and women working alonside men changes people norms and values

25
Q

AO3 of LF

A

strengths:
1. unlike MF and RF their solutions are much more pragmatic and more realistic
2. they acknowledge the progress woman have made
weaknesses:
RF Greer crticises LF- changes in social policy have not stopped inequality and woman are still not protected it is still so common as woman still face a “glass-ceiling”- the sex discrimination act did not help

26
Q

Difference feminist Views

always use this at the end of an essay!!!

A

-they criticise all strands of feminists as they are a homogenous group, for example:
-RF imply women are oppressed
-LF imply women have progressed
(this creates the notion that all women are the same)
-this generalises women, as not all women are the same

27
Q

DF view on women

A

women—–>diverse group
they have different experiences, religions, ethnicities, sexuality’s and social class’s
this results in everyones experience in the family being different
Black fem- criticise other strands of fem from seeing the fam from a white women’s experience- cannot generalise

28
Q

AO3 of DF

A

critics:
1. ignores common experiences among women as a group e.g. all women are more likely to be SA by men (regardless of ethnicity, sexuality etc.)
