Women are socialised to be dependent on men and put themselves second place to men.

What are the 3 main strands of feminist thought on the family?
- Marxist.
- Radical.

Main theory of Marxist feminism in the family:
Women aren’t paid for housework which is unfair.
Benston (1969)
If housework were paid even at minimum wage, it would greatly damage capitalist profits.
Ansley (1972)
Men take out their frustration and stress from women rather than challenging the capitalist system.
Radical feminism: main point on family.
Exploitation of women is down to domination of men in society. Men will always oppress women.
Who are? Delphy and leonard (1992)
Radical feminists who see the family as a patriarchal institution in which women do most work, and men get most of the benefit.
Main 2 points of liberal feminism:
- Cultural norms and alues which are reinforced by the family and other institutions in society.
- Family is only sexist because it supports mainstream culture which is sexist, but social change is possible.
Who do liberal feminists try to put pressure on and why?
- Institutions such as the legal system and government.
- To try to change laws on social policies which discriminate against women.
