Feminism Flashcards
What do catholics believe about female ordination
Some can take active role e.g. nuns and help ministers lead worship
But they can’t be ordained
Timothy’s 1 about female ordinaton
‘Women should learn in quietness’ and that they should not teach or assume authority over a man
Criticism of Timothy 1
Letter written for 1 particular circumstance at 1 particular church and that its not relevant to modern day equal oppurtunity
Written to address the issue of fetlity worship in Ephesus - only applicable to 1 church
Galatians Paul about female ordination
All equal as long there is faith in Jesus ‘ there is neither male or female, for u are all 1 in Christ’
There r no differences between them therefore there should be no differences in the roles they are expected to carry out
What does terullian say about women
Described women to be the ‘devil’s doorway’ and to be seductive temptresses that lure men into sinful behaviour
What does Paul’s Timothy 1 and tertulain say about women in power
Opposed women holding positions of authority in he church, asserting that they should remain silent and submissive
What is Bible criticism
Study of the bible using the same tools in literature in order to fully understand the Bible
How would Conservative evangelicals like Karl Barth use biblical criticism in order to interpret the Bible
Bible shouldn’t be read in a liberal manner because by rationalising the Christian faith in a way that is compatible with science (liberal theology), and with modern day societal norms, it can risk diminishing the word of god
Protestant atttudes to female ordination
Accept femal ordination= justification has already been achieved through god’s work, therefore there is no need to follow rigid structured like apostolic succession
Believe that justification is passive and salvation is a free gift from god, church male leadership isn’t important and is not a sacramental transmission
Point towards priesthood of all believers ( all r spiritually equal beofre god)= no special role for priests
wh would catholics oppose female ordination
Risk fracturing the unity of ecumenical churches
Ecumenism- the communion and unity of churches worldwide, vital mission of the church
Female ordination=barrier to unity= catholic and Orthodox Church doesn’t ordain women but Protestants and Church of England do (libby lane)
