What is feminism?
Wanting to achieve gender equality in society or make women superior to men
What is the difference between difference and equality feminists?
Difference - women being superior to men; should be socialised differently
Equality - women and men are equal (gender); should be socialised and treated the same
What is sex and gender?
Sex - biological differences between men and women
Gender - cultural and social differences between men and women that leads to different socialisation and experiences in life
Which types of feminists believe that gender is a social construction and that men and women should be socialised equally?

What is the concept of patriarchy?
That men dominate society in the public and private sphere and have power over women, putting them in a subordinate position in life
What does the personal is political phrase mean?
That patriarchy is in the public and private sphere
Which feminists are revolutionary or reformist?
Revolutionary - radical, socialist, postmodernist
Reformist - liberal
What are the beliefs of CPG?
Liberal/socialist feminist
HN - Women and men are equal and biological differences = irrelevant and girls play with gender-neutral toys

Society - Women have historically been assigned inferior roles
Economy - Women rely on their sexual assets to men to please them and be financially dependent on them; women and men co-habitat together rather than own private property
What are Simone de Beauvoir’s beliefs?
Socialist
HN - ‘one is not born, but rather becomes a woman’ (the Second Sex); gender is a social construct created by men to oppress women
State - Reinforces a male-dominated culture that limits women’s autonomy and freedom
Society - Societal norms restrain men and women from self-realisation and freedom of expression; women = othered
Economy - Men dominate economic life - limits women’s opportunities - need a socialist revolution (later said this was not enough)
