Q

What are Simone de Beauvoir’s beliefs?

A

Socialist

HN - ‘one is not born, but rather becomes a woman’ (the Second Sex); gender is a social construct created by men to oppress women

State - Reinforces a male-dominated culture that limits women’s autonomy and freedom

Society - Societal norms restrain men and women from self-realisation and freedom of expression; women = othered

Economy - Men dominate economic life - limits women’s opportunities - need a socialist revolution (later said this was not enough)
